Hosted by Jennie Swain and Nela Trifkovic, Songs of Be/Longing brings together some of Melbourne’s best-loved song-leaders, sharing stories and songs of their diverse backgrounds, exploring being, longing and belonging, inspiring and connecting participating community choirs Grace Notes Singers and Voices of Moonee Valley, inviting audience members to join in and sharing afternoon tea. Featuring presenters Nicki Johnson, Sunny Kim, Liona Tatafu, George Williams and Geoffrey Williams. Songs of Be/Longing builds on the success of Jennie and Nela’s 2024/25 Residency at the Bowery Theatre, Be/Longing Between Mountains. Audiences and presenters alike found the first Be/Longing perforum deeply connecting and inclusive, as they were inspired to reflect on their identity, displaced heritages and ancestors. An important part of the Be/Longing project is to involve all people in the conversation, breaking down the barriers between audience and artist, creating a safe space to share and listen with curiosity and authenticity, in a time when social harmony is urgently needed.
