Find the best environment events and make the most of your time this weekend in Melbourne. From music to pets and more, we have the biggest event range and best discovery experience, there's something for everyone.

To celebrate International Composting Awareness Week, Valoriza and City of Casey are offering a free compost (soil conditioner) collection event to 100 Casey households. Households that book in can collect up to 0.5m3 (half a cubic metre) of soil conditioner. Registered households can bring a ute, trailer, or a car with bags/buckets/trug tubs/whatever works for you, to collect their compost/soil conditioner. Compost/soil conditioner must be collected in one trip (if you can't take the full 0.5m3 in one go, then you forfeit the remainder). Please bring a helper if you can, and a shovel/spade or two to help you load your compost.

Our monthly Waste Not Hub which enables locals to repair, share and swap items in an effort to reduce waste

Olives to Oil is a popular event hosted by CERES at the Whittlesea Civic Centre in South Morang, VIC. Participants can drop off olives and pick up freshly pressed olive oil. The event has specific guidelines and terms and conditions that participants must read and acknowledge. Tickets are available on Humanitix, with a portion of profits dedicated to charity.

Veolia Recycling and Recovery Pty Ltd has paid $1,000,000 into the EPA Restorative Account following a Supreme Court Order. EPA must apply the funds for delivery of a project, or a number of projects, that will benefit the community near the Hallam Road Landfill. EPA is convening a community forum so that community members can participate in project development. We want to hear your views, perspectives, and preferences on how the $1,000,000 in the restorative project account should be used. Potential project sponsors are also encouraged to attend.

Join a hands-on permaculture working bee in West Footscray—learn, garden, and connect. Lunch provided
To mark David Attenborough's 100th birthday year, join ecologist Dr Jacinta Humphrey for a guided walk along the Elwood Canal. Elster Creek doesn't have the reputation of Melbourne's more celebrated waterways but look closer and it's teeming with life: over 40 bird species, native frogs, short-finned eels making extraordinary ocean migrations, and plants doing quiet ecological work along the canal edges. This walk is a chance to see that biodiversity firsthand and to understand how the choices we make every day in Glen Eira flow directly downstream to this creek and out into Port Phillip Bay. Using the iNaturalist app, participants will photograph and identify species along the route, contributing real observations to the Elster Creek biodiversity record. Every sighting logged becomes part of a living dataset for the corridor. Jacinta will guide identifications and share her expertise in native wildlife in residential and urban environments. This early morning timeslot is prime for birdwatching and amateur wildlife enthusiasts alike.

Governments at state, national and international levels are starting to introduce policies to support a circular economy — one that uses resources for longer and gets more value out of them. The goal is to reduce waste going to landfill, recover more materials, and respond to growing resource shortages and climate change. But for these policies to work, they need to be put into action locally. Local communities are also where new ideas can be tested — moving beyond recycling to focus on reusing, repairing, sharing and regenerating materials, and rethinking what we even consider “waste”. Join us for a conversation with MVS volunteer and recent PhD graduate Corey Ferguson, who will share insights from his research on why these broader “R” principles matter, and how local, grassroots action can drive real change. The MVS Rethinking Waste Collective also invites others in our community who are working towards a circular economy to be part of this discussion, as we explore how we can work together locally to create a more fair and sustainable future in Moonee Valley.
Share or Swap your pre-loved items and swap for re-loved treasure for free to reduce waste and build a sustainable community. Everything is absolutely free at the Port Phillip EcoCentre. Bring up to 5 items like clothes, shoes, books, kitchenware, plants, cosmetics, seeds, garden harvest, pet items, postcards, kids’ items, toys, puzzles, bags, photo frames, jewellery, art supplies, hobby items, umbrellas, stationery, and long shelf-life food. No items to share? No problem! Join us for a circular economy workshop with food rescue groups and a slow sewing workshop. Let's connect to actively contribute to 'CIRCULAR ECONOMY' by reducing waste and building a sustainable community.
Bring your Mother and celebrate Mothers' Day by joining us for this pleasant walk. Yarran Dheran Nature Reserve is a special place for birds! With the creek providing a reliable source of water and a variety of bushland habitats, it provides a permanent home or a place to visit for some 80 different species of birds. Celebrate Mothers' Day with your Mother by joining us for this pleasant walk, where we will identify different habitats that various species prefer and see if we can find some birds. Wear walking shoes and binoculars if you have them. Not suitable for very young children or prams. No dogs please

The annual Botanica Festival is happening in the beautiful grounds of Rippon Lea Estate on Mother's Day (Sunday 10 May, 10am to 3pm). There will be garden tours, plant sales and lots of stalls to explore (including CWA scones and orchids!) - all celebrating the natural environment. Tickets to the Botanica Festival are $15 per adult, with lower prices for concessions and children; free for Trust Members and Glen Eira Garden Pass holders. Nothing Like Nature is offering two FREE group sessions at the Botanica Festival - a 1-hour nature journaling workshop at 10:30am and a 1-hour mindful wander at 12 noon. In the 10:30am - 11:30am Nature Journaling session, all supplies provided, along with tips, techniques and prompts to easily fill your page. In the noon to 1:00pm Mindfulness Wander session, no experience necessary. Just a curiosity about being present and mindful. Expect to slow down, awaken all of your senses, and engage with the beauty around you. Leave the session with a deep sense of calm and connection, and some nature-based mindfulness practices to continue at home.
