Climate change and disaster displacement disproportionately impact women and girls, especially in Australia and the Pacific, and further increase barriers to safety, security, and rights. UN Women projects that by 2050, climate change may push up to 158 million more women and girls into extreme poverty – 16 million more than men and boys – as climate-driven impacts continue to deepen existing gender inequalities. Australia plays a crucial role in championing women’s leadership and ensuring climate justice is gender justice.

Climate change is affecting our cities, and urban greening plays a vital role in responding to it. This session presented by Sustainable Gardening Australia explores how trees, shrubs, grasses and flowers form an urban forest that helps cool our built environments while supporting climate change mitigation and adaptation. Participants will learn about climate change, the urban heat island effect, and how vegetation can reduce heat in our communities. The session also highlights how people naturally gravitate toward green spaces—something clearly seen during the COVID-19 pandemic—and encourages us to imagine living, working and playing in greener environments every day. Creating this urban forest is a shared responsibility, and this session will show how everyone can contribute.
