Climate change is affecting our cities, and urban greening plays a vital role in responding to it. This session presented by Sustainable Gardening Australia explores how trees, shrubs, grasses and flowers form an urban forest that helps cool our built environments while supporting climate change mitigation and adaptation. Participants will learn about climate change, the urban heat island effect, and how vegetation can reduce heat in our communities. The session also highlights how people naturally gravitate toward green spaces—something clearly seen during the COVID-19 pandemic—and encourages us to imagine living, working and playing in greener environments every day. Creating this urban forest is a shared responsibility, and this session will show how everyone can contribute.
Ever wondered what actually happens to your rubbish, FOGO and recycling once it’s collected? Banyule's newly reopened Rethink Centre The session will also include a viewing of the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) from a dedicated platform, giving you a rare behind-the-scenes look at how recycling is sorted and processed in real time. Seeing the system in action helps bring the theory to life and often changes the way people think about what they put in their bins. Perfect for anyone wanting a clearer understanding of waste and recycling, whether you’re just getting started or looking to refresh your knowledge. Please ensure you wear closed toe footwear.
