Intermediate Native American Flute Workshop This workshop is for people who already have a Native American flute and want to take the next step. At a certain point, playing can start to feel repetitive or a bit limited. This session is about moving past that and finding more flow, variation, and depth in your playing. We’ll keep things simple and practical, focusing on how to play in a way that feels more natural and expressive. You’ll be guided through: playing with others and finding your place in the sound listening and responding, rather than repeating patterns creating more space, variation, and flow in your playing drone flutes and deeper flutes handcrafted High Spirits Double Nova flutes (made in Arizona) These flutes add a second drone note underneath what you play, creating a fuller, more grounded sound. Many players are drawn to these deeper flutes for their slower, more immersive feel, helping you settle into the music without needing to learn anything complicated. You’ll have the chance to hear and try these during the session. A small number will also be available for purchase on the day. You’ll explore: Breath control, vibrato, and tone refinement Ornamentation and rhythmic variation Phrasing, tension and resolution Improvisational guidance and musical frameworks Creating melodies and simple song structures Playing with feeling, listening, and space Using the flute to support the nervous system Applying the flute in personal practice, musical expression, and in breathwork, yoga, and sound healing contexts Playing with others (drone and call & response) Playing with other instruments Through guided exercises and group playing, you’ll develop greater control, subtlety, and musical awareness. Surf culture’s past, present and future will collide on the southern Gold Coast when Flotsam Festival 2026 returns from May 1 to 15. Running across Coolangatta, Kirra, Currumbin and Burleigh Heads, the multi-venue festival will once again transform the coastline into a celebration of surf storytelling, visual art and coastal creativity. For 2026, the festival's fifth annual innings, Flotsam will honour the past of surf culture through landmark photography and film, including the International Masters of Surf Exhibition at Dust Temple curated by renowned surf photographer Ted Grambeau, and the 50th anniversary screening of iconic surf film Tubular Swells. The present Flotsam Kirra Hub Festival favourites return including (Surf) Girls on Film, celebrating female surf culture, and Oceans, a Surfrider Foundation community-focused day of beach clean-ups, environmental workshops and ocean conservation film screenings. Flotsam also looks to the future of surf storytelling through initiatives supporting emerging artists, filmmakers and photographers. Next Wave will provide a platform for young creatives throughout the festival, while the Homegrown finale will celebrate emerging Australian talent through film, photography and live music, including the finalists of the Flotsam Homegrown Surf Clip Competition and major photography competitions. Presented by Flotsam Arts Inc. and supported by Experience Gold Coast, Flotsam Festival continues to celebrate the creativity, community and stories behind surf culture.
