Waterbug Sampling – Currumbin
Presented by David Francis, Francisii Ecology, this seminar will share why the Nature Design Guide was created, outline its key concepts and design elements, and demonstrate its use through a series of case examples. With a professional background in terrestrial ecology, David will delve deeper into biodiversity and habitat creation, offering practical insights for anyone engaged in shaping or using our urban environments.
Join Ocean Connect in the search for sea slugs and nudibranch in the rocky shores in Burleigh. Record and identify the sea slugs inhabiting the rocky shore habitat in Burleigh to assist in mapping the diversity of the area and creating a species list for the Burleigh Heads Rocky Shores. This workshop is suitable for adults and children supervised by their parents.
Join Ocean Connects Marine Biologists for citizen science and monitor the health of Gold Coast's seagrass meadows. This event will be held at Carters Bank, meeting at Marine Parade to kayak to the carters bank (wavebreak island) seagrass meadows.
Join the City of Gold Coast and Hinterland Regional Park Bushcare Group in helping to restore parklands adjoining Bonogin Creek through community tree planting. Enhance the parkland's natural beauty and biodiversity. No experience is necessary. Suited for ages 5 and above.
Protect, restore, and enhance our natural areas with NaturallyGC Landcare. Be part of a conservation effort with the City of Gold Coast and Hinterland Regional Park Bushcare Group, planting trees to restore Bonogin Creek ecosystems and wildlife habitats. A City officer will be on-site, with all materials supplied and holes pre-dug. If you enjoy the outdoors, community action, and helping protect our natural environment, this event is for you. No experience is necessary to join.
Join us in Lower Beechmont to learn from experts in the field on Madeira vine impact, identification, and treatment. Madeira Vine (Andredera cordifolia) is an invasive transformer weed that blankets and smothers native species. It is a prolific weed that transforms landscapes and is considered one of Australia’s worst environmental invasive plants - listed as a Weed of National Significance. Watergum has been working in the Nerang River Catchment to control and remove the Madiera Vine from private properties since 2021. The program, funded by Seqwater, has successfully targeted over 58 hectares of infested area. The success of the program has led to recent expansion into Lower Beechmont, where initial treatment is now underway. Watergum Community is partnering with the City of Gold Coast's Land for Wildlife team and restoration specialists, NV Environmental, to deliver an informative workshop on Madeira Vine - covering impact, identification, and treatment. This workshop is aimed towards landholders in Lower Beechmont that are looking for professional advice on identification and treatment of the invasive weed. Attendees will learn the importance of early treatment, how to identify the weed, and effective treatment methods.
Join the City of Gold Coast and Tarrabora Bushcare Group for tree planting and environmental restoration at Toolona Park, Tugun—help protect local ecosystems. A City officer will be on-site, with all materials supplied and holes pre-dug.
Learn how to assess the health of our waterways by sampling and collecting data on waterbug species. This activity is suitable for both children and adults of all ages. You will learn how to collect waterbug samples correctly before collecting and identifying the different species. The data collected is nationally recognised and is shared with our local councils to provide up-to-date information about the health of our waterways.
Join Ocean Connects Marine Biologists for some citizen science to monitor the health of Gold Coast's seagrass meadows. Join our Ocean Connect marine science team on their fortnightly seagrass survey to actively monitor the status and trends in seagrass conditions around the Gold Coast. This event will be held at the South Stradbroke site, accessible via boat. Seagrasses are a habitat forming species and they play a critical role in the equilibrium of coastal ecosystems. They provide many key ecosystem services, such as providing a nursery and habitat for animals, preventing coastal erosion and sequestering a large amount of carbon dioxide. 7 species occur in the Gold Coast region and cover an estimated 22% of the Broadwater. It is crucial to monitor these change in order to be able to mitigate widespread loss. Ultimately by protecting the seagrass meadows the wider Gold Coast community will indirectly benefit from the sustained water quality in the Gold Coast Broadwater and surrounding region, ultimately, enhancing recreational fishing, marine tourism and providing the right framework for future generations to enjoy.
Protect, restore, and enhance our natural areas with NaturallyGC Landcare. Plant trees with the City of Gold Coast and Currumbin Creek Care Group to restore 1.5 km of Currumbin Creek, supporting healthier waterways and local wildlife.
