At the Autumn Equinox we arrive at a moment of balance. Day and night stand equal. Light and dark share the sky in perfect measure. For a brief breath in the turning of the Wheel, the world rests in equilibrium. And then, quietly, almost imperceptibly, the light begins its slow descent. This is Mabon, the second harvest, the Harvest of Fruits. In the old traditions, this was a time to gather what had ripened in the fields and give thanks for the abundance of the Earth. It was a season of gratitude, completion, and preparation for the colder months to come. Here on this land, we honour Iuk, the Eel Season, when eels were running and First people gathered in times of plenty. It was a time of feasting, ritual, and community. A time to recognise that abundance is both gift and responsibility. We stand at a threshold. The extended light has ended. The increasing darkness has not yet fully begun.
