This special evening session invites citizen scientists, families, and the conservation-curious to explore the creatures that thrive when most of us are winding down. We’ll head out in small groups, each guided by an expert naturalist with a passion for the night shift from arboreal mammals gliding overhead, to roosting birds, to the dazzling array of insects drawn to our lights. With spotlights, keen eyes, and a sense of adventure, we’ll uncover the species that only emerge under the cover of darkness. All observations will be recorded on iNaturalist, helping build a richer picture of local biodiversity and contributing to real conservation data. Step into the night and discover a side of nature that most people never get to see. The canopy is full of life - let’s shine a light on it together.
Take some time out for yourself and enjoy nature journaling at this free regular event. These informal sessions are a great opportunity to relax and connect creatively with nature. Participants can take their nature journals out into the field for practice and inspiration.

Creating Wildlife-Friendly Backyards — It Starts at Home Free community workshop | RSVP essential | Limited places Join Dr Tamielle Brunt (Wildlife Ecologist) and Wildlife Queensland for a practical and engaging workshop exploring how our backyards, gardens and green spaces can support the wildlife that lives alongside us and enrich the liveability of our own neighbourhoods. Each of us can create a backyard that makes a real difference for the urban wildlife we share our suburbs with. These spaces are a lifeline for their survival and bring us closer to the remarkable creatures of South East Queensland — how lucky are we! While this event is hosted in Forestdale, the message reaches far beyond one suburb. Every garden, balcony or green pocket has the potential to support native wildlife and contribute to healthier neighbourhood ecosystems. The afternoon begins at Lincoln Green Park in Forestdale, where Dr Tam will present on topics including: • Designing wildlife-friendly gardens that support birds, pollinators and native fauna, strengthening local biodiversity • Plant choices and garden structure that provide food, shelter and habitat, including designing gardens that support tree retention • Tree hollows as wildlife homes, including nest boxes, which designs work best and where to place them • Habitat restoration techniques, including hollow carving where natural hollows are limited • Practical ideas and real examples that work for acreage blocks, suburban yards and smaller gardens, helping biodiversity thrive where we live short guided tour through Forestdale, Think of it as a workshop meets an open gardens tour, offering both expert guidance and real-life inspiration. Living in balance with nature is one of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves, creating safe havens for our families, supporting local wildlife, and protecting the natural wonder that makes our communities more liveable. Whether you are just starting out or looking for new ideas, you’ll leave with practical knowledge and inspiration to help turn your own backyard into a haven for wildlife.
