Join DLC and retired geologist Tom Loucks to learn about the past and present of the geological theory of Plate Tectonics. From 400-year-old speculations about the apparent jig-saw fit of continents to hypotheses of continental drift and sea-floor spreading, learn how these came together in the late 1960s to become earth science’s unifying theory of Plate Tectonics. As a student, Tom worked in Central America with some of the researchers using this new-found knowledge to study live volcanoes – as they smoked and erupted over the subduction zone - and he will weave in his own photographs and anecdotes from several years of field work related to Central American volcanism and plate tectonics into an addendum to his main presentation.
