This International Women’s Day, join us for an afternoon of food, music and community in support of Mākou — celebrating women, championing female artisans, and helping bring this next chapter to life. After more than a decade in fashion, I began questioning the impact the industry has on both people and planet — the pace, the waste, and who ultimately bears the cost. I felt called to do things differently: slower, more intentional, and grounded in systems that put people and planet first. Living in Indonesia deepened that shift, and Mākou was born. Mākou will collaborate with female artisans in developing countries and Indigenous communities, supporting women to create economic independence, preserve cultural traditions, and lead initiatives in their own communities. Through this work, we will engage with communities across the Northern Territory, India, Africa, Palestine, and Afghanistan, co-creating projects guided by the women themselves. Funds raised on the day will go directly toward travel and on-the-ground engagement, allowing us to take a true grassroots approach — building genuine relationships, collaborating closely with communities, and ensuring resources are directed where they can create meaningful, lasting impact. The afternoon itself is a community-focused event and a platform for women. We’ll begin with a Welcome to Country at 2pm, followed by local favourites DJ Salami, Asha Franco, DJ Ingrid with Olita joining us from Naarm. My beautiful friend Rosa will be serving her first Ethiopian pop-up kitchen, alongside Indonesian goddess Made from Ibu Bali. We’ll also be drawing a raffle on the day, generously supported by some incredible NR brands who have come on board. All First Nations people are warmly invited to attend free of charge.
