Immerse yourself in Lanyon's colourful past with Tim the Yowie Man, as he recounts the tall tales of Lanyon’s early families and workers. Then under the cloak of darkness embark on a behind-the-scenes tour of Lanyon Homestead and surrounds. A unique experience that shines a spotlight on the untold stories of this historic property. Not for the faint-hearted. For participants aged 16 years and over. The tour involves walking over uneven ground, occasionally in low lighting. Please wear long pants, covered walking shoes and weather appropriate clothing. BYO water bottle and torch. Reasonable fitness required.
Join Ngunawal Traditional Custodian Tyronne Bell as he shares his cultural knowledge of traditional Aboriginal plant use. Gain an in-depth introduction to native plants and their uses, including foods, fibres and medicines. You will get to touch and taste the flavours of the bush.
Step into the history of the gardens at Lanyon Homestead with a guided tour led by James Marshall, one of the expert gardeners at ACT Historic Places. Stroll through the flower gardens, orchards, and vegetable beds, and discover the stories that sprout from the soil.
Experience the iconic Australian tradition of whip cracking at Lanyon Homestead. Head to the paddock at 11.00am to learn the skill, rhythm and precision of whip cracking with Callum and Brody. This lively, hands-on session is suitable for beginners, with no prior experience needed. Open to ages 16 and above, it’s a great chance to try something uniquely Australian in a fun outdoor setting.
Join Senior Curator of Social History, Dr Hannah Paddon, in a talk about the recent acquisition of a painting by early surveyor Robert Hoddle. Learn about the significance of the work for Lanyon, and of Hoddle’s work in mapping our district and documenting our landscapes during the 1830s.
Be guided on a journey of exploration through sound and the stars. Experience a deeply restful sound bath weaving healing frequencies from Crystal bowls, handpans, drums, nature chimes, intuitive vocals and other instruments from around the world, led by Clare from Luna Elements Wellness. Ground yourself in the natural surroundings of Lanyon Homestead as you are bathed in sound and the magic and wonder of the Milky Way and the galaxies beyond. Finish with a plant mylk chai in silent reflection, soaking in the night sky as you listen to the sounds of the surrounding wilderness. This very special event will occur outdoors, allowing us to bathe in the glory of the stars and listen to the night sounds of the surrounding bush and riverlands.
Join Aboriginal fibre artist Jessika Spencer (Ngurru) for a relaxed bracelet weaving workshop designed especially for beginners. In this hands on session, participants will learn the foundations of weaving techniques to create their own wearable bracelet. No prior experience is needed, this workshop is perfect for first time makers and anyone wanting to slow down and make something by hand. Jessika will guide you through the process, sharing tips on working with fibres, building tension, and finishing your piece. All materials are provided, and there is plenty of space to work at your own pace. This workshop is as much about connection and mindfulness as it is about making, an opportunity to sit, yarn, and create in a supportive environment.
