Find the best art events and make the most of your time in Friday Harbor. From art to networking and more, we have the biggest event range and best discovery experience, there's something for everyone.
Use our pottery wheels or our slab roller to make a platter and decorate it with the sgraffito surface design technique. In this class, participants will have the option to use the wheel to throw a form of their choosing or use our slab roller to make a slab-based vessel. We will then paint on slip or underglaze and learn about the sgraffito surface design technique. Students will carve out their image onto thier forms, with encouragement to create images that tell a story or share a feeling or message. This class is for anyone interested in creating a functional ceramic object with imagery on it! Artists with wheel experience and artists new to ceramics will have different options appropriate to their needs in this class.
Spin a skein of yarn in this hands-on class where we practice the ancient skill of twisting fibers into line! 'Perfectly regular yet asymmetric, the twist (also known as the helix) is a fundamental structure to both life and fabric.' In this course we will learn how to transform wool from a raw fleece into finished yarn utilizing the principles of twist. Students will learn the fundamentals of creating yarn including: how to use a drop spindle and a wheel, woolen vs. worsted yarn, Z and S twist, plying, and setting. They will also be introduced to washing, skirting, and carding raw wool to prepare them for larger home studio projects. No spinning experience necessary, only patience and trust in the process!
Learn the cyanotype printing process, a non-silver alternative photography/printing technique originally developed to create blueprints! Cyanotype printing is a simple process that allows for lots of experimentation, and can be layered with other types of printmaking and photography processes to create intricate, dynamic images. We'll play with the different materials that can be printed on and create our own prints. We will learn about the different ways to make negatives, as well as contact printing with objects. Students will leave this workshop with prints to keep, as well as a zine explaining the steps in detail so they can make more at home!
Practice your plein air painting at Landbank properties across San Juan Island! We are excited to offer this plein air painting series for a second season! Alchemy partners with the Landbank in this monthly class. It is an opportunity for participants to connect with nature and create artworks inspired by our Islands’ landscapes. Each session will focus on a different section of Land Bank preserves on the Westside of San Juan Island.
