Motherhood’s newest garage-surf long-player - Thunder Perfect Mind - is a divinity-defying deep-dive of forced perspective, a “Dark, Expanding Cloud” and some light time travel. Borne of lyricist Brydon Crain’s pedestrian commutes across Fredericton, NB’s Wolastoq River, the 11-track album narrates the sudden abduction of an unsuspecting bridge-crosser by an ever-growing otherworldly force. Yeeted back to the dawn of time, held captive in The Cloud as a spectator to all of history, there’s ample time to accept that progress will never be linear. To eclipse what controls, the only way out is through. But what lies beyond the Cloud? Leaning less on their penchant to use genre as a splatter paint, Thunder Perfect Mind is Motherhood’s most focused and cohesive album to date. “Despite it being a concept album that’s basically a sci-fi novel, I’m pretty sure it’s the most approachable album we’ve ever made.” Penny laughs. “I’m really proud of where we’ve gotten to as songwriters.” Told as much through its clever wordplay as through the spirited instrumentation, Thunder Perfect Mind draws on inspirations as vast as mystic Gnosticism, Ennio Morricone, Bad Brains and Kurt Vonnegut. It’s a high-octane ripper that weaves surf, garage and punk into an unlikely sci-fi fever dream, with a sound that is undeniably and otherwise inexplicably Motherhood. Adam notes, “We’ve been interested in the relationship between surf and punk, where that intersects… a lot of these pieces were kicking around for a while - some almost ten years.” Brydon adds, “Yeah, it was about putting the pieces together in a way that will get crowds going and reflecting that on tape. We see what people respond to at our shows and we wanted to give them songs they’ll love.” When asked to expound on the allegory of Thunder Perfect Mind, the band isn’t about to overshare. Brydon slyly reports that “the real meaning usually hits me a few years after the fact.” But whichever way you cut it, Motherhood’s genius lies in their ability to pack heady metaphors and deeply conceptual work into a playful and unpretentious package; Thunder Perfect Mind is no exception. https://www.instagram.com/mightymightymums/
