CLICK Book Now For Table ReservationsFULL SERVICE DINING BY BABYGOLD BARBECUE AVAILABLE IN THE CLUB The Chicago Skyliners Big Band was formed in 1988 for the sole purpose of prolonging the musical memory of the Big Band Era.Members of the band in the early days were informed that this was not a major money making proposition, only a mission to keep Big Bands alive.A house band at FitzGeralds Night Club in Berwyn since 1991, The Chicago Skyliners Big Band following has grown to become one of the top Big Bands in Chicagoland.Blue Birdland Jazz recording artists, besides original material, the Band features the music of Count Basie, Buddy Rich, Sammy Nestico, Stan Kenton, and Maynard Ferguson to name a few.Not your fathers big band music, the Chicago Skyliners feature contemporary arrangements of traditional big band hits. The Chicago Tribune stated, This group consistently found the ideal tempo, style and phrasing for the scores they played. Jazziz Magazine said, The band has a surplus of exceptional soloists coupled with high powered ensemble playing. His life in music of all kinds sometimes feels like a swirl through the sky, where his songs point out all the majesty and mystery of how he sees the world. The sounds he makes take him places that he might not even predict, but once there, greatness always follows. Its just the way Escovedo is. It has happened over and over for decades, almost like a fateful agreement he has with the cosmos. There is a good chance it cannot be explained, especially by him.Maybe thats because this is a musician who feels magic, both in himself and the world around him, and is open to the experience of whatever comes his way. It is not always easy, and can have a high demand on how a person lives. But it is the way that Escovedo is always moving forward.On this new album, Alejandro Escovedo has taken a road rarely traveled, which is totally in keeping with how he has lived his life in music. Echo Dancing is an experiment in how to use the past to shape the future. By recording completely new and repurposed versions of songs from his past, Escovedo actually gets a chance to rewrite his own history. Its also an idea that pushes growth into the present, and asks an artist to see themselves anew. I always feel that a well-written song can withstand a lot of abuse, Escovedo says. It is an area of creativity that the man has always honored. Turning a past song inside out leads to discovery of new ideas youmight not have understood about the song, he says. Even lyrical refurbishing has proven helpful and effective. Its like interpreting your own work anew. The songs never seem to be complete. Steeped in the Soul Jazz and Funk traditions of Grant Green, Jimmy Smith, Earl Van Dyke, and Booker T s; The Heavy Sounds testament to instrumental soul music from the 60s and early 70s has quite literally created a band that can say everything while saying nothing.The Heavy Sounds are Ryan Juravic (drums), John W Lauler (bass), John Wills (Guitar), Alexander Kerwin (Alto Sax) and Pete Benson (Organ). Whats amazing about these cats is that their level of expertise in the instrumental setting is equaled and heightened by their work backing up legendary soul shouters from all over Chicago. This band has had the honor of backing up singers like Otis Clay, Syl Johnson, Renaldo Domino, Gina Bloom, Michael Avery, JC Brooks and others. Their extensive work as session musicians and backing bands has morphed this soul outfit into Chicagos modern equivalent to the Funk Brothers.
