Get ready to roll up your sleeves and Muck in the mangroves! This immersive, low-tide exploration invites homeschool explorers to step directly into the saltmarsh mangrove ecosystem of Perico Bayou for a true field-science experience. Participants will hike into the mangroves during peak low tide to conduct hands-on investigations, including water quality testing, soil pH analysis, and observations of soil movement and invertebrate life. Along the way, explorers will search for signs of wildlife—tracks in the mud, jumping mullet, and the ancient molts of horseshoe crabs. At the bayou, explorers will practice species identification by examining tracks and markings left behind in the muck and comparing them to field guides to discover which animals call this ecosystem home. Explorers will be hiking and should be prepared for our 1-mile trek and scientific experiments to get dirty—but leave with a deeper appreciation and understanding of one of Florida’s most important coastal ecosystems.

This event is a free community program geared towards pre-school and elementary-aged children. Families will enjoy guided art activities, music-making, make-and-take art projects, and a read-aloud featuring a mindful moment, led by Mr. Stevey and local teaching artists.
