Discover the best events and make the most of your time in North Maleny. From environment to spirituality and more, we have the biggest event range and best discovery experience, there's something for everyone.

We all know persimmons, sapotes, black ebony - exotic fruits and timber from the tropics! They all belong to the plant order, “Ericales.” In our rainforests we have our own trees from this order, and in this workshop, we will look at two of the families. The Sapotaceae includes the genera Planchonella, Niemeyera and Pleioluma, all trees with plum-like fruit. The Ebenaceae include the genus Diospyros, also with berry-like fruit. What are the characteristics of these families? They are closely related - what are the differences? How do we tell the species apart? Join Hilary Pearl and Rowena Thomas at the Barung Nursery for a two-hour workshop learning eight species of the Sapotaceae and Ebenaceae from our local forests. We recommend you bring a pen, a torch (or a phone with a torch), and your own hand lens if you have one. Magnifying lenses and hand lenses will be available to use, and worksheets will be supplied. We will finish with a walk in the Barung Seed Forest.
