History and Hat Making for Derby Day. Once, everyone wore hats everywhere. In the 18th century making hats, or millinery, was one of the few jobs for a respectable woman who needed to provide for her family. In the late 18th and 19th century, the making of hats, and the supplies for hat making was a significant industry, employing hundreds of women in NYC and other centers of the garment industry. For those who couldn't afford to buy their own hat, women's magazines provided patterns and instructions for making your own, from the mid-18th century until as late as the 1960s. Join us as we explore the history of millinery in the United States, and then make our own creations for Derby Day. It's amazing what you can do with a couple of placemats, some feathers, flowers, and old jewelry and a glue gun. Workshop is limited to 8 participants. The cost is $45 dollars per person. All materials and tools are provided, but feel free to bring something special you might want to incorporate into your hat
